Agfa Optima III

The 1960 Agfa Optima III was the post-war economic miracle wrapped in a brown leather ever-ready case, built for a generation that preferred listening to rock ‘n’ roll over studying exposure tables.

Right around the year Elvis finished his military service in Hesse and teens were shedding their stiff conservative trousers, Agfa rolled out effortless photography. Hit the “Magic Button,” and the camera handled shutter speed and aperture without a single battery. The selenium light meter did the math while a little stoplight blinked in the viewfinder: green meant go, red warned of darker times. Estimating distance? Just dial in the right icon—a single person, a group, or a mountain—and you were done.

Between kidney-shaped coffee tables and Elvis playing on the transistor radio, photography became a breeze: look, wait for green, and click!
